Christmas Brownie Recipe

Yummy Brownies!
Nikki made these treats this Christmas & many of you wanted the recipe, so here it is…

1 lb beef liver
1/4 cup canola oil
2 tbsp honey
2 eggs
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
Pinch salt (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F

Cut liver into chunks. In a food processor, blend the liver until it’s liquefied, adding a little water if necessary. Add oil, honey, and eggs, and whiz until blended. Transfer into a large bowl.

Add flour, baking powder and salt, and stir until just combined.

Spread batter in an 8” x 8” pan that has been sprayed with non-stick spray and bake for 25-30 minutes, until the top in springy to the touch. (If you have a small dog, you can bake the brownies in a 9” x 13” pan for 15-20 minutes. This will make thinner brownies that can be cut into smaller squares.) Cool in the pan.

If you like, frost the cooled brownies with a softened light cream cheese, sweetened with honey and thinned with a little water.

Makes about 16 brownies.
Enjoy!

Holiday Season Thoughts

Simple things to think of while celebrating throughout December that will keep both you and your pooch happy & safe.
Every year throughout December we celebrate with family and friends. We laugh, dance and eat our way through the month and through most of it we have our faithful dogs by our side. So that everyone can enjoy the festive time here are a few things we can do to ensure our dogs are safe and happy.

Keep up with their exercise. Take them for a big walk before you go out or have people over, getting rid of energy is always a great start to any party.

Remember that chocolates and sweets are not only our favourites but dogs too. Chocolate of any kind is not good for dogs but the less coco in the chocolate the more the dog would need to eat to become toxic. If your dog does get into chocolate call a 24hr vet clinic…put the number by or in your phone for easy/quick access.

Don’t be afraid to tell your family & friends the rules of your home. “NO touch, talk or eye contact right away, human food, jumping up, begging, not allowed in/out certain rooms”. Structure is very important, as you already know, to keeping your dog balanced and that will go a long way to making your festivities flawless.

We all enjoy getting together in large crowds and small and we would like our pooches to be a part of the fun. Our dogs enjoy being with us, but it may be overwhelming for some of them so here are just a couple behaviours/signals we can look for to see if our dogs are becoming stress and should be removed from the crowed.

Displacement Activities (Definition)
An animal or human activity that seems inappropriate to the context, such as head scratching when one is confused, considered to arise unconsciously when a conflict between antagonistic urges cannot be resolved.

Displacement Behaviours

• Yawning: Yawning is one of the most common signs of stress. Stress-related yawns will be more intense than “sleepy” yawns. The dog may be in an excited vs. relaxed state when
 yawning.
• Licking nose
• Sniffing the ground
• Scratching
• Shaking
• Blinking
• Lip smack

There are more but these are a few blatant signals/reactions. Just be awear of how your dog is dealing with the celebrating and remove her/him if needed. You may also want to have your dog go for a “sleep over” and get them out of the house all together. We get many dogs throughout the year, not just during December, for an overnight stay while the humans play.

Above all have fun with Fido and friends and have a safe holiday season!!!
